DRUG NAME: Fioricet
Fioricet Uses?
The prescription Fioricet contains acetaminophen, a pain and fever reducer.
Fioricet also has caffeine in it. This works by constricting blood vessels
that help cause tension headaches. The drug Fioricet is a barbiturate.
It acts by slowing the nerve impulses of the central nervous system. This
causes the muscles to relax. When these three drugs are combined, acetaminophen,
caffeine, and Fioricet, it effectively treats the pain caused by tension
headaches. It is not yet understood exactly how it does this.
Fioricet Directions?
Be careful to follow all instructions when using Fioricet. Talk to your
doctor if you have any questions about how to safely take this medication.
Each dose should be swallowed with a full glass of water. You can drink
a glass of milk or eat food with it if this pill upsets your stomach.
Never use more than your prescribed dose. Ask your doctor if you think
you need stronger pain relief.
Fioricet Side Effects?
Some people have negative side effects while using Fioricet, including
seizures; fast or irregular heart beats; or allergic symptoms, including
difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue,
or face, or hives. If you have any of these symptoms, stop taking Fioricet
and get immediate medical care. Other rare but serious side effects include
liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or
discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue); slow, weak
breathing; blood problems (easy or unusual bleeding or bruising); or low
blood sugar (fatigue, increased hunger or thirst, dizziness, or fainting).
Speak to your doctor if you experience mild side effects such as drowsiness;
shortness of breath; dizziness, confusion or lightheadedness; dry mouth;
nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or decreased appetite; tiredness, leg
pain, or muscle weakness; irritability, nervousness, agitation, anxiety
or excitability; rash or itching; feeling of intoxication; headache; or
constipation.
Fioricet Warnings?
Use caution while taking Fioricet. It can cause drowsiness or dizziness,
so be careful when driving, operating heavy machinery, or performing any
other potentially hazardous activities. If you do feel drowsy or dizzy,
do not perform any of these tasks. Do not use sleeping pills, sedatives,
tranquilizers, or antihistamines at the same time as Fioricet unless your
doctor approves it. These medications can make you even more drowsy. Avoid
alcohol while taking Fioricet, since this can lead to liver damage and
increase the chances of experiencing dizziness or drowsiness. Always monitor
the acetaminophen content of other medications while using Fioricet and
make sure not to exceed 4000 mg (4 g) per day.
Fioricet Drug Interactions?
Do not use Fioricet if you have also used monoamine oxidase inhibitors
(MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine
(Parnate) in the last two weeks. It can trigger a potentially serious
reaction. Use care not to combine sedatives, tranquilizers, antihistamines,
or sleeping pills with Fioricet. Excessive drowsiness can result. It's
important for your doctor to be familiar with all other medications you
use. Do not take any new prescriptions without their understanding. Other
products, such as cold and allergy medicine, or products to reduce fever
or pain, also contain acetaminophen. Take care not to combine them and
take too much acetaminophen. Your doctor must know about all of your medicines.
Fioricet Missed Dose?
If you miss a dose of Fioricet, do not double the next dose. Instead,
skip the missed dose and start again with your usual dosing schedule.
Fioricet Storage?
Store Fioricet out of the reach of children. It should be kept in a cool,
dark place.
Anything Else I Should Know About Fioricet?
One ingredient of Fioricet is acetaminophen. This ingredient works to
ease pain and reduce fever. Another ingredient is caffeine. Caffeine constricts
blood vessels, including those thought to be involved in causing tension
headaches. Fioricet, a barbiturate, relaxes muscles by slowing the brain
and central nervous system. The combination of ingredients, acetaminophen,
caffeine, and Fioricet, work together to relieve painful tension headaches.
It's not clear how it does this, however.
