DRUG NAME: PROPECIA�
(Merck)
COMMON NAME: FINASTERIDE
WHAT IS THIS MEDICATION USED FOR?Propecia� is used to treat male
pattern hair loss on the vertex (at top of head) and anterior mid-scalp
area.
WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE PROPECIA�?
- People with liver
function abnormalities.
- Women who are
pregnant or may potentially be pregnant should not take or handle crushed
or broken Propecia� tablets.
HOW DO I TAKE MY PROPECIA�?
Take one tablet daily, with or without meals. It usually takes 3 months
to experience a slowing of hair loss, and approximately 6 months to experience
visible hair regrowth. If you do not see any benefit after approximately
12 months, further treatments is unlikely to be of benefit. Stopping treatment
leads to a gradual reversal of the beneficial effects. Alcohol can be consumed
while taking Propecia�. It will NOT work faster or better if taken greater
than one time per day. Tablets may be taken with food.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF PROPECIA�?
Propecia� is generally well tolerated. The following side effects were reported
in clinical trials: Sexual dysfunction (impotence), less desire for sex,
and a decreased volume of semen. These side effects occurred in less than
2 percent of the men treated and usually subsided over time in men who continued
treatment.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- Propecia� can affect
the blood test called the PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) used in the
screening of prostate cancer. It is extremely important to let your
doctor know that you are taking Propecia� if you have the PSA test done.
- Do not share this
medication with anyone.
- Store this medication
at room temperature and out of the reach of children. Protect from moisture.
Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after
the expiration date.
- Contact your doctor,
pharmacist or seek emergency medical assistance if you have difficulty
breathing, closing of throat, swelling of lips/tongue/face or hives
- Should you miss
a dose, take as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next
dose, skip the dose you missed. Do not take a double dose to catch up.
