DRUG NAME: XENICAL® (Roche)
COMMON NAME: ORLISTAT
What is this medication used for?
Xenical® is used as part of a diet plan for the management of obesity
including weight loss and weight maintenance. It works by partially blocking
the absorption of fat from food. The undigested fat goes out of your body
in bowel movements.
Who should not take XENICAL®?
People with a disorder that keeps you from absorbing or digesting food
or if you have gallbladder disease.
How do I take my XENICAL®?
Xenical® should be taken 3 times a day with each meal that contains
fat or up to 1 hour after the meal. It can be skipped if a meal is skipped
or contains very little fat. There is no proven benefit of using Xenical®
greater than 3 times in a day. Xenical® should be used in conjunction
with a nutritionally balanced, reduced-calorie diet containing no more
than 30% of calories from fat. Alcohol can be consumed while taking Xenical®.
Take each dose of Xenical® with a full glass of water.
What are the possible side effects of XENICAL®?
The most common side effects of Xenical® include oily spotting from
bowel, flatus with discharge, fecal urgency, fatty/oily stool, oily evacuation,
increased defecation, and fecal incontinence. In clinical trials, these
side effects were mild and decreased as the patient continues treatment.
These effects will be more common if Xenical® is taken with high-fat
meals. A low fat diet will decrease the likelihood of side effects. Talk
to your physician if these side effects are bothersome.
Other impotant information:
- Take a multivitamin once a day while on Xenical® because it keeps
you from absorbing certain essential vitamins. This vitamin should not
be taken at the same time as Xenical® (needs to be separated by
2 hours). The easiest way to achieve this is to take your multivitamin
at bedtime.
- People taking Pravastatin® should take it at night to avoid a
drug interaction with Xenical®.
- Obesity is sometimes the result of other disease states, such as hypothyroidism.
It is extremely important that you have regular yearly check-ups with
your primary care physician!
- Do not share this medication with anyone.
- Store this medication at room temperature and out of the reach of
children. Protect from moisture. Keep container tightly closed. Throw
away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
- Talk with your doctor if you are currently taking cyclosporine.
- Talk with your doctor if have diabetes or a history of kidney stones.
