| Depression - An Illness, Not a Weakness
Depressive disorders affect approximately 19 million American adults.
Major Depressive Disorder or what we call "Depression" is a
common medical condition. It surfaces in about one of every five people
during the course of their lives. Depression is not a character flaw.
It is neither a "mood" nor a personal weakness that you can
change at will or alter by "pulling yourself together." Depression
is a problem that is often ignored or untreated. The fact is, depression
is a debilitating illness that has a profound effect on family life and
the ability to be productive at work or school. This serious illness often
requires treatment if it is severe or lasts more than a few days.

DRUG NAME: Zoloft
Zoloft is the most prescribed agent of its kind in the United States,
and is available in over 80 countries. You can feel confident that Zoloft
is a widely used prescription medicine. Zoloft is one of a class of medicines
called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Zoloft has been
proven effective in treating depression.
Although the way Zoloft works for is not completely understood, what
is understood is that Zoloft is a medicine that helps correct the chemical
imbalance of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a naturally occurring
chemical in the brain that is involved in the transmission of messages
between nerve cells.
Taking Zoloft Safely
Zoloft is contraindicated until at least 14 days have passed since discontinuing
a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) medicine. MAOI medicines are used
to treat depression and other conditions. A patient should never take
Zoloft at the same time as an MAOI. A patient must wait at least 2 weeks
before switching from Zoloft to an MAOI or from an MAOI to Zoloft. Always
be sure to check with your doctor or healthcare professional if you are
taking any other medicine while you are taking Zoloft. This includes medicines
you can buy with a prescription and those you can buy without a prescription
(like cold medicines, sleep aids, and aspirin, as well as herbal and home
remedies, vitamins, and mineral supplements). You should let your doctor
know if you become pregnant while you are taking Zoloft. You should also
discuss breast-feeding with your doctor, and you should let your doctor
know if you have liver disease. Zoloft is a prescription medicine intended
for you, so you should always follow your doctor's instructions about
taking it. Don't share it with others. You should not drink alcohol if
you take Zoloft. This includes beer, wine, and hard liquor. When Zoloft
was studied, it did not increase the effects of alcohol, but using Zoloft
with alcohol is not advised.
How long does it take to feel better?
The time it takes to feel better is different for everyone. You may start
to feel better within 2 to 4 weeks or it may take as long as 6 to 8 weeks.
Even if you don’t feel better right away, it’s important to
keep taking your medicine as directed. The people around you may see a
change for the better before you do.
How long will I have to take Zoloft?
Your doctor will decide the length of treatment that’s right for
you. It is important to keep taking Zoloft as directed by your doctor.
Even if you feel better, you should not stop taking Zoloft without talking
to your doctor first.
Is Zoloft habit forming?
No. In medical studies, it has been shown that Zoloft is not addictive
and not habit forming.
Which medical conditions is Zoloft approved to treat?
Zoloft is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment
of depression, panic disorder, OCD, and PTSD.
Can Zoloft be taken with other medicines?
If you’re taking any of the medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors,
or MAOIs, you should not take Zoloft. These are medicines used to treat
depression and other conditions. Always tell your doctor if you are taking
any other medicines. This includes non-prescription medicines like cold
medicines, sleep aids, pain relievers, herbal and home remedies, vitamins,
and mineral supplements.
What are the most common side effects of Zoloft?
Some people taking Zoloft may have side effects. The most common side
effects include upset stomach, having trouble sleeping, diarrhea, dry
mouth, sexual side effects, feeling unusually sleepy or tired, tremor,
indigestion, increase of sweating, feeling agitated, and decreased appetite.
In clinical studies with Zoloft, few patients were bothered enough by
side effects to stop taking their medicine. Tell your doctor about any
side effects you may be experiencing. Your doctor may be able to adjust
your treatment plan to help you feel better.
Will I gain weight on Zoloft?
In clinical studies, Zoloft has not been associated with any significant
weight changes.
